FILEMAKER: The Insert Picture Script Step

INSERT PICTURE
This script step will bring over a specified and compatible graphic file into a currently selected container field. This command does have the limitation that the field being inserted into HAS TO BE on the current layout when the script step is executed.

There are two options for this script step including the check box to store only a reference to the file and a button that allows you to specify the source of the file. The reference check box allows you to store only a pointer to where the file resides. This means the entire content of the picture isn’t placed within the FileMaker file, thereby eliminating your database from getting a stored picture bloat in size. Of course, if the picture is moved, deleted from the source, renamed or otherwise unavailable, the link to the inserted picture pointer will be broken.

HOW IT IS USED
Actually, the name of this script step pretty much explains how it is used. One kind of funny story about the time I first used the Insert Picture script step was for a employee staff database I created when I was working in the technical support center for Apple Computer. I added this button so that people could quickly put an employees picture on their employee record. We then printed out a cubicle sign for each person that had their name, their picture and a barcode of their employee number. The idea for the barcode was to make it easier to inventory all the Apple equipment in each persons cubicle. A few quick clicks of the barcode scanner and we had a persons inventory updated!

Anyway, it wasn’t long before the practical jokers came into play. It started off with a persons picture being replaced with Daffy Duck or another cartoon character. We had to finally add security to the button when people started taking the managers face and placing it on top of pictures of Xena (the war princess) and the like.
